I’ve been seeing lots of American stuff in Switzerland. Saw a newer Camaro parked on the street. Also had a couple of Swiss girls sitting next to me on the train from France with various US military paraphernalia on their clothing which was really weird. One girl was wearing some fashion sweater that said US Marines on it, and another girl had a US Army patch on her jacket. I’ve seen a few American flag shirts as well. Obama really has done a lot to improve the US’s image overseas. No way in hell would you have seen stuff like this back in 2005-2008. Then I saw this beauty in Bern.
Feel the Bern.

Too bad the US armed forces closed almost all of their bases in Germany. Way less American cars to see:(

I had friends who were stationed in Germany, but none of them brought cars with them as they were all headed to Iraq.

Wow, the rarest Opel, lol. The Mustang is already off to hunt the people of Bern.

The previous gen Camaro was for sale in Europe until Chevy withdrew from the market. I’ve only ever seen them on the road in large numbers in Switzerland though (spotted 4 when passing through last week). For some reason the Swiss (and Germans) love their grey imports as well, lots (relatively speaking) of Mustangs and Dodges around too.

In recent years yes. My mother’s cousin is married to an American soldier and they actually bought two cars while being stationed here. I remember a fair share of cars owned by members of the Army because those were mostly cars that I’ve never even heard or seen before.

Ah, good to know, thanks! I’m guessing Swiss car tax is also lower and/or not based on displacement/emissions?

I think that the VAT in Switzerland is about 15% but I couldn’t really find much on a quick search.

Dodges were also quite popular among fire departments. I just don’t know why.

The Swiss are fucking weird. I saw a statue of a Jew eating children in the middle of Bern today...

That’s amazing. A ‘70s Trans Am would look out of place in a lot of modern American cities.

Yeah... and my country currently has a presidential candidate demonizing certain religious groups. On a related note Elie Wiesel died today.

Seems like it’s giant douche vs. turd sandwich this year.
It’s kind of sad that the generation that witnessed WW2 is slowly dying away.

My grandfather fought in WWII and received a Purple Heart as a paratrooper. They’re all dead and gone now. My great grandfather ran away from home in Calabria, Italy, joined the US Navy, fought in WWI, then became a US citizen. Both those generations are gone.
With the 100th anniversary of The Battle of The Somme coming yesterday, I hope we don’t have to repeat the mistakes of the past in order to learn from them.

One great grandfather of mine fought in Verdun and barely made it out. My other great grandfather fought in WW2 at the age of 45 and died in Stalingrad just weeks before WW2 ended. They didn’t really have a choice, my great grandmother even hid my grandfather and his sister when party members asked them to join the Hitler youth. Not really proud about that but I can’t deny it. The sad part is that my great grandmother and my grandfather were informed in 1975 (!) that my great grandfather was probably killed in 1945. Ironically my grandfather from my father’s side worked at a tank factory in New York during WW2. I just hope that we’ll never ever start such fucking atrocities again.

What an amazing tale. It’s great that both of us can have a civilized conversation over such atrocities that occurred. I’m actually half Russian, but know nothing about my Russian side as thy disowned my grandfather when he married an Italian. I work at an orthodox Jewish school in the US, and have students whose parents and grandparents are holocaust survivors so I have a third perspective on the events of the last century. It really is up to our generation to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself with any religion or ethnicity.
